Evelyn frantically searches for her missing phone — Until her daughter reveals she felt strange vibrations coming from the laundry basket

Chapter 5 — Evelyn identifies the vehicle key fob — Until they look out the living room window and spot an unfamiliar car

Evelyn stared at the silver keys in Caleb’s hand.

The small leather fob bore the distinct emblem of a local car rental agency.

Neither she nor Caleb rented vehicles.

Their personal cars sat parked in the driveway in plain view.

Caleb stepped closer to the front window, peering out through the glass panes.

A dark sedan was parked near the very edge of the driveway, just past the mailbox.

It had not been there twenty minutes ago.

Evelyn walked over beside her husband, her breath catching in her throat.

She looked out at the unfamiliar vehicle sitting idly against the curb.

Caleb looked down at the key fob resting in his palm.

He pressed the small black lock button out of sheer instinct.

Outside in the driveway, the dark sedan’s hazard lights blinked twice in rapid succession.

The sharp click of the car doors unlocking echoed faintly through the double-pane glass.

Evelyn grabbed her husband’s arm, her fingers tightening into a hard grip.

Someone was out there.

They stood in silence, watching the empty driver’s seat of the parked car.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the front entryway.

The front door handle jiggles softly as someone attempts to turn it from the outside.
