Chapter 10 — Elena cleans the hardwood floors with a smile — Then Barnaby gets a gentle bath outside
Elena returns to the hallway with a bucket of warm soapy water and a thick yellow sponge.
The suds smell faintly of fresh lemon and clean vinegar.
She kneels down beside the first dark smudge near the living room entrance.
She presses the wet sponge against the polished hardwood.
The dried edges of the mud dissolve instantly under the warm water.
Elena wipes firmly in wide, steady circles.
The brown smear lifts away from the golden wood grain.
She rinses the dirty sponge in the plastic bucket until the water turns a cloudy gray.
Brenda stands nearby with a dry cotton towel in her hands.
She bends down to help dry the damp planks right behind Elena.
“Let me take that section over by the door,” Brenda offers quietly.
“Thank you, Mom,” Elena replies with a soft, forgiving nod.
Little Chloe sits cross-legged on the clean part of the hallway rug.
She watches the two adults restore the floor to its original shine.
Barnaby rests his heavy golden head across Chloe’s lap.
The golden retriever is completely unbothered by the morning’s chaos.
His dark brown eyes drift slowly shut as Chloe gently strokes his furry ears.
The last of the muddy tracks vanishes under the final pass of the dry towel.
The hardwood floor gleams once again under the bright overhead lights.
Not a single trace of dirt remains where the chaotic footprints once stretched.
“All clean,” Elena announces, standing up and stretching her sore back.
She sets the bucket down and wipes her hands on a dry cloth.
Brenda looks down at the spotless floor and then at her granddaughter.
“Next time, I promise I will check the evidence before I raise my voice,” Brenda says sincerely.
Chloe offers a small, forgiving smile and squeezes Barnaby’s paw.
“It’s okay, Grandma,” Chloe replies.
“Now, who’s ready for a nice warm bath outside?” Elena asks, looking directly at the family pet.
Barnaby lets out a low, happy huff and wags his tail against the rug.
Ten minutes later, the garden hose is running with lukewarm water on the backyard patio.
Barnaby stands patiently under the gentle stream, letting the soapy water rinse the last of the garden mud from his paws.
Elena holds the nozzle while Chloe hands out the fluffy blue towels.
The rain clouds above finally begin to part, letting a warm stream of sunlight break through the sky and shine down upon the peaceful yard.
