Chapter 6 — Uncovering a pattern of extortion
The video on the screen plays forward in smooth, high-definition color.
Caleb leans across the counter to speak with the newly arrived visitors.
He points down at an open reservation ledger that has no names written on it.
He shakes his head firmly at the guests.
The audio feed picks up his exact words through the overhead microphone.
“We are completely booked out for the evening,” Caleb tells the arriving couple on the screen.
“Unless you want to take advantage of our immediate walk-in priority tier.”
The couple on the recording exchange uncertain glances.
They lean closer to the podium to hear his terms.
“What does that tier involve?” the male guest asks on the footage.
Caleb lowers his voice slightly, though the boundary microphone captures it clearly.
“It requires a direct cash handling fee paid right here at the stand,” Caleb explains.
“One hundred dollars cash, bypassing the standard registration desk. That gets you seated at table twelve immediately.”
The video shows the male guest pulling a leather wallet from his jacket.
He counts out five twenty-dollar bills and hands them directly across the wood counter to Caleb.
Caleb accepts the cash with a smooth motion.
He slides the bills off the counter surface and tucks them swiftly into the lower shelf of the host stand.
He does not open the digital terminal to log a cash payment.
He does not print a receipt for the transaction.
Instead, he reaches into a side drawer and pulls out a blank cardstock placeholder.
He writes table twelve on it and hands it to the guests.
The manager taps the pause button on the tablet screen.
The video freezes on Caleb sliding the unrecorded cash into his personal pocket space.
The manager’s jaw tightens into a hard line.
“That table was already reserved under a regular prepaid corporate party,” the manager states quietly.
“He resold a booked table for cash.”
The father steps closer to the screen.
His eyes study the timestamp overlay stamped in the top right corner of the video frame.
“What time was that transaction logged?” the father asks.
“Six-fourteen PM,” the manager replies.
“Right before we walked through the front doors.”
The manager steps away from the host podium and opens the lower storage drawer completely.
He reaches inside and lifts out the plastic cash box used for minor guest adjustments.
He inserts a small metal key into the brass lock and turns it.
The lid springs open with a sharp click.
The manager flips open the inner coin trays and lifts them out.
Underneath the plastic tray, a small stack of loose paper bills sits tucked against the back wall of the metal box.
The manager pulls the bills out and fans them across the wooden counter.
He checks the serial numbers against the digital shift log on his tablet.
“None of these cash entries match the register printout for tonight,” the manager declares.
“There are three separate undocumented cash payments collected within the last two hours.”
The manager holds up two specific reservation slips paper-clipped to the cash.
Both slips bear the handwritten notation of walk-in upgrades.
Both tables were marked as immediately available after guests handed cash directly to Caleb.
“He’s running a side operation right here at the entrance,” the manager says, his voice shaking with suppressed anger.
“Charging desperate families for tables they already paid for, or shaking down guests for extra cash.”
Caleb watches the manager inspect the hidden cash from across the room.
The false confidence completely drains from Caleb’s face.
He realizes the extent of the digital and physical evidence now piled on the counter.
Without saying a single word, Caleb takes two steps backward toward the main exit corridor.
He turns his shoulders away from the security office and breaks into a fast walk toward the glass doors.
The manager drops the cash onto the counter and points urgently toward the exit.
“Stop him,” the manager yells to the security guard standing near the coat check.
The security guard reacts instantly.
He steps directly into the center of the doorway, blocking Caleb’s path to the street.
