Chapter 9 — Vanessa offers a heartfelt apology to her daughter for the false accusation
Vanessa dropped to her knees right in front of her daughter.
She reached out with trembling hands and pulled Penny into a tight, protective embrace.
“I am so, so sorry, Penny,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking with deep regret.
“I should never have yelled at you. I should have listened instead of jumping to conclusions.”
Penny buried her face against her mother’s shoulder.
She wrapped her small arms tightly around Vanessa’s neck.
The sobs that had shaken the little girl’s frame for the last hour finally began to subside.
“It’s okay, Mommy,” Penny murmured against her sweater.
Vanessa stroked her daughter’s hair gently over and over again.
She held the girl close, letting the physical warmth erase the harshness of the confrontation.
“I promise I will never accuse you like that again,” Vanessa said, pressing a soft kiss to the top of Penny’s head.
Penny nodded quietly into Vanessa’s shoulder.
The heavy, suffocating tension that had filled the dining room finally evaporated into the warm afternoon air.
Marcus stood nearby watching the two of them with a quiet, relieved smile on his face.
He looked over at the office alcove where the source of all the trouble still sat plugged into the wall.
The oscillating electric fan continued to hum softly on the corner of the desk.
Marcus walked over to the side table to pack up the damaged papers and secure the remaining documents.
He reached down to unplug the fan cord from the baseboard outlet to ensure total safety.
