Grandmother blames granddaughter for spilled orange juice — Until a kitchen test proves a shocking manufacturing defect

Chapter 1 — The Puddle on the Tiles

A bright pool of orange juice spread across the kitchen tiles, warning of the trouble that had just unfolded.

Abigail stood over her granddaughter with sharp disapproval in her eyes.

“I thought we talked about being careful.”

Chloe stood frozen, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed uncontrollably.

Abigail pointed a rigid finger down at the sticky puddle near the base of the refrigerator.

“You never pay attention when you put things away.”

Chloe shook her head blindly, her small hands clutched tightly against the fabric of her shirt.

She tried to speak, but only a choked sob escaped her throat.

Abigail folded her arms across her chest and let out a heavy sigh of irritation.

“Now look at this mess you’ve made for everyone else to clean up.”

Hearing the commotion from the adjacent hallway, Caleb rushed into the kitchen.

He took in the scene at a single glance.

The bright orange puddle.

The shattered glass fragments mixed with plastic cap remnants.

Then he saw Chloe shaking in fear against the counter.

Caleb immediately dropped to his knees on the tiled floor.

He gently took Chloe’s small hands and pulled her close against his shoulder.

“It’s okay,” Caleb whispered softly, rubbing circles into her back.

“Take a breath.”

Chloe buried her face in his shirt and sniffled hard.

“Show me what happened,” Caleb encouraged her in a low, steady voice.

Chloe wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve and pointed a trembling finger directly toward the open door of the stainless steel refrigerator.

She mumbled something about the shelf moving on its own.

Caleb stood up from the floor and stepped closer to the appliance.

He examined the interior wire shelves and noticed right away that the right-side alignment rail was sitting completely crooked.

He picked up the heavy bottle of juice that had bounced away from the puddle and tested its weight in his hand.

Caleb placed the heavy container back onto the upper rack where Chloe would have stored it.

As soon as Caleb let go of the bottle, the faulty shelf slipped right out of its plastic track with a sharp metallic snap, sending the container crashing down onto the floor a second time.

Abigail blinked in utter shock as the exact accident repeated itself right in front of her eyes.

Caleb turned his head to look back at his mother with a quiet, pointed expression.
