Grandmother blames granddaughter for spilled orange juice — Until a kitchen test proves a shocking manufacturing defect

Chapter 7 — Uncovering Past Warnings

Abigail lowered her hand and let it drop heavily to her side.

The quiet in the kitchen felt almost suffocating.

Caleb stood up from his crouch by the open refrigerator door.

He looked down at the broken plastic fragments resting on the bottom wire rack.

This was not a fresh break.

The interior edges of the snapped tab were already dull and discolored.

Caleb turned his gaze toward his mother.

“How long has this shelf been acting up, Mom?” he asked.

Abigail blinked, caught off guard by the direct question.

“What do you mean?” she asked defensively.

“I mean the plastic is worn down,” Caleb said, pointing inside the unit.

“This didn’t snap today.”

Abigail crossed her arms over her chest.

She tried to trace her thoughts back over the past few days.

“It stuck a couple of times last week,” she admitted in a low voice.

“It jammed when I pulled it out to clean behind the milk.”

Chloe wiped her remaining tears away with the sleeve of her sweater.

She sniffled quietly while listening to the adults talk.

“I heard a weird rattling noise on Tuesday,” Abigail muttered.

“I thought it was just the ice maker acting up again.”

“Did you look at it then?” Caleb asked.

“No,” Abigail said, shaking her head.

“I was in the middle of meal prep. I just shoved the shelf back in place and ignored it.”

The past ignored warning signs now connected directly to the morning’s disaster.

The vibrating hum of the refrigerator compressor seemed to grow louder in the quiet room.

Abigail stared at the snapped plastic piece on the wire rack.

Her earlier certainty about Chloe’s clumsiness dissolved completely.

The appliance had been failing silently for days.

Chloe had simply been the one unlucky enough to use it when the bracket finally gave way.

Caleb knelt back down to examine the lower mounting channel more closely.

He ran his finger along the edge of the support groove.

Caleb points out a cracked plastic tab on the lower side of the mounting bracket.
