Chapter 1 — Diner Waiter Accuses Crying Boy of Spilling Drink — Until Security Tablet Footage Replays the Truth
Caleb sat trembling in the red vinyl booth.
Tears streamed down his young face.
A wooden diner table stretched out before him, ruined by a widening pool of dark iced tea.
Shattered plastic tumbler shards lay scattered near the edge of the laminate surface.
Todd stood over them with a stern, rigid expression.
He knocked it over.
Todd crossed his arms, staring down at the crying boy.
You are going to have to pay for the dry cleaning on my apron and the table damage.
It came out to twenty dollars total.
Caleb held up his wet, sticky hands.
I did not touch it, he sobbed, his voice cracking.
I swear I did not touch it.
Brenda pulled her son closer against her side.
He did not do it, she told the waiter, her voice sharp with sudden anger.
He has been sitting here drawing with his crayons the entire time.
Todd let out a loud, disbelieving scoff.
Kids always say that when they mess up.
He tapped his service tablet against his palm.
Accidents happen, but parents need to take responsibility.
Caleb sniffled and wiped his nose on his sleeve.
He looked straight up toward the acoustic tile ceiling.
He pointed a shaking finger directly at the black dome security camera mounted overhead.
The red LED light blinked steadily in the corner of the housing.
It saw everything, Caleb whispered.
Brenda narrowed her eyes at the server.
Let us check it then.
She reached out and snatched Todd’s service tablet right out of his hand before he could pull it away.
Her fingers flew across the glass screen, tapping the icon for the local restaurant management portal.
Todd stiffened, his fingers twitching toward the empty space where the device had just been.
You cannot just access that, Todd said, his voice pitching up an octave.
That is employee system property.
Brenda ignored him completely.
She typed in the master override password she remembered from her brief stint working front-of-house hospitality years ago.
The live streaming menu popped up instantly on the display.
