Chapter 10 — Cleanup After the Storm
Benjamin grabs a stack of towels from the hallway closet.
He carries them back into the living room and hands one to Rachel.
Rachel takes the towel with a small, embarrassed smile.
She knows she has plenty of cleaning work ahead of her on the hardwood floor.
Benjamin drops to one knee beside the family dog.
He takes the second towel and starts rubbing the thick mud off the golden retriever’s wet coat.
The golden retriever wags its tail enthusiastically.
It pants happily while Benjamin dries its wet ears and paws.
Chloe stands up from the rug, clutching her teddy bear in one arm.
She walks over to watch the dog get cleaned.
Her tears are completely gone, replaced by a soft, curious expression.
Rachel kneels down on the floor right beside her husband and daughter.
She uses her towel to wipe away the last remaining smudge of mud near the edge of the rug.
The room smells faintly of wet fur and damp earth.
It is a messy, chaotic end to a quiet rainy evening.
Yet the heavy anger from earlier has completely vanished.
Benjamin looks across the room at Rachel and laughs quietly.
Rachel shakes her head and rolls her eyes with a good-natured sigh.
She wraps her arm around Chloe’s waist and pulls her close.
The dog lets out a contented sigh and rests its muddy head right on Benjamin’s shoe.
The family embraces the messy reality of pet ownership together as the rain continues to tap gently against the glass patio door.
