Rachel Accuses Her Young Daughter of Tracking Mud Across the Living Room Floor — Until an Examination of Her Slippers and a Look at the Patio Door Reveals the True Culprit

Chapter 4 — The Figure in the Rain

The heavy downpour battered the outside patio glass.

Rainwater streamed in thick sheets down the exterior side of the sliding doors.

A large, dark silhouette sat patiently right against the pane.

The wet silhouette occupied the entire lower half of the glass frame.

It did not move away from the light spilling out from the living room.

The shape possessed the distinct, unmistakable outline of a large dog.

A soft whimper echoed faintly from the other side of the glass, muffled by the storm.

Benjamin stared at the massive form pressed against the door.

He reached out a hand toward the glass handle.

A thick layer of condensation blurred the view from the inside.

Benjamin paused and brought his hand up.

He wiped his palm firmly across the center of the glass to clear away the fog.
