Chapter 10 — Restoring peace in the household as the rain finally clears outside
The gray clouds overhead began to part slowly.
A thin line of golden afternoon sunlight pierced through the gray expanse.
It stretched across the wet grass of the front lawn.
The heavy downpour that had battered the suburban neighborhood for hours finally tapered off into a light, scattered mist.
Outside the living room window, the puddles on the driveway caught the sudden burst of natural light.
Inside, the warm illumination of the overhead hallway fixture chased away the gloomy shadows.
Oliver turned the object over in his hands.
It was the main metal housing of the ordered appliance.
Because of the thick protective plastic wrap sealed tightly around it at the factory, the inner components remained completely untouched by the rainwater.
Chloe leaned in closer to inspect the part.
A small smile finally broke across her face.
“It actually survived,” she said in disbelief.
“It looks completely fine,” Samantha agreed, stepping forward to examine the dry metal surface.
Oliver let out a long, shaky breath.
The lingering tension that had choked the room vanished entirely.
He set the dry part gently down on the kitchen island.
He turned back to face his daughter.
“We can wipe down the exterior casing and dry out the outer box,” Oliver said gently.
“The unit itself works.”
“I am just glad nothing was actually lost,” Chloe replied.
Samantha stepped between them.
She wrapped her arms around both her husband and her daughter in a firm, grounding embrace.
Oliver leaned into the hug, resting his chin on Chloe’s head.
Chloe hugged them both back, the bitter memory of the porch accusation finally melting away.
They stood together in the warm, bright living room light.
Outside, the rain stopped completely, leaving behind a clean, quiet neighborhood.
