Chapter 10 — The Rest of the Party
Samantha pinched the edge of the paper with two fingers.
She pulled carefully.
The folded slip slid free from the wooden groove with a faint scrape.
Clara watched from across the kitchen, her brow furrowing in confusion.
What is that?
Clara asked, taking a hesitant step forward.
Samantha unfolded the small square of lined notebook paper.
A familiar messy handwriting stared back up at her.
It was a handwritten grocery list.
At the very bottom of the list, written in heavy pencil strokes, were two specific words.
Pink frosting.
Samantha looked up from the paper.
She stared straight across the kitchen at Clara.
Clara blinked, her eyes widening as she recognized the handwriting.
She slowly lowered the empty cake box to the counter.
I left that on the counter yesterday, Clara admitted, her voice dropping to a murmur.
She rubbed the back of her neck in deep embarrassment.
I must have dropped it right before I put the box down.
Barnaby must have smelled the sweet paper and nudged the box open with his nose, Samantha said, connecting the final missing piece of the puzzle.
She let out a soft, knowing chuckle.
He was hunting for sugar long before any of us walked into the room.
Clara let out a long breath, finally letting go of the last bit of residual tension.
I guess I owe everyone a trip to the bakery, Clara said, offering a weak, self-deprecating smile.
There is no need for that, Samantha replied warmly.
She reached out, wrapping an arm around Clara’s shoulder to clear the air completely.
We have a backup dessert in the freezer, remember?
Clara’s face brightened instantly.
The chocolate fudge torte.
Exactly, Samantha smiled.
It might not match the party decorations, but nobody turns down chocolate.
Harper giggled again, the last traces of her earlier tears completely gone.
She ran over to the pantry and pulled out a fresh box of napkins, setting them neatly on the island.
Can I help set out the plates?
Harper asked, her voice bright and eager.
Of course you can, sweetheart, Samantha answered, stepping over to the refrigerator.
The kitchen suddenly sprang back into vibrant, joyful motion.
Samantha pulled the rich chocolate torte from the freezer, setting it carefully on the clean marble counter.
Clara busied herself wiping down the remaining dry spots on the floor, working diligently to make amends.
Footsteps echoed softly from the front hallway a few moments later.
The front door swung open wide, letting in a wave of cheerful chatter and cool afternoon air.
The first wave of party guests had finally arrived.
They streamed through the entryway, carrying wrapped gifts and laughing loudly.
Hey everyone!
A cheerful voice called out from the hallway.
Samantha wiped her hands on a clean kitchen towel and walked out to greet them.
Welcome!
Samantha said, her face glowing with hospitality.
Come on back to the kitchen, we are just getting everything set up.
The guests followed the welcoming scent of baking and fresh coffee down the hall.
As they stepped into the brightly lit kitchen, Barnaby trotted over to greet them.
He didn’t have a single trace of pink frosting left on his golden muzzle.
His tail wagged in a wide, happy arc as he leaned against the guests’ legs for attention.
Clara stood by the island, proudly slicing generous portions of the dark chocolate torte onto dessert plates.
She handed the first plate directly to Harper with a warm, apologetic smile.
Harper took the plate, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
She looked up at her mother, then over at Clara, before digging happily into the sweet treat.
Samantha stood back for a brief moment, watching the lively room fill with laughter and conversation.
The dark cloud of the afternoon had vanished entirely.
The house was warm, the guests were happy, and the golden retriever was fast asleep on the rug, dreaming peacefully of sweet rewards.
