Grandmother accuses granddaughter of stealing her precious heirloom — Then the father reaches into the running kitchen sink and pulls out a shocking discovery

Chapter 6 — The Sparkling Discovery

The harsh fluorescent light of the kitchen struck the wet metal wires directly.

A sudden flash of brilliant light caught Evelyn’s eye.

Resting perfectly inside the center of the wire mesh was a solid band of polished white gold.

The attached diamond caught the overhead illumination and threw a sharp, sparkling reflection against the nearby stainless steel wall of the sink.

It was not washed away.

It had not slipped down into the dark pipes beneath the floorboards.

The ring sat securely nestled within the tiny grid of the strainer basket, completely intact.

Harrison lowered the basket just an inch so the harsh glare hit the facets of the stone directly.

The diamond twinkled brightly, throwing tiny splinters of rainbow light across the wet counter surface.

Charlotte pointed a trembling finger at the basket, her voice thin and choked with emotion.

“See?” she whispered. “I told you I was just washing my hands.”

Evelyn stared at the sparkling object with wide, unblinking eyes.

Her lips parted slightly, but no sound came out.

The rigid posture she had maintained throughout the argument slowly began to crumble.

Harrison held the retrieved ring out on his flat palm for both Evelyn and Charlotte to see.
