Chapter 5 — The Blue and White Ceramic Shatters on the Floor — Then Margaret Watches the Impact in Disbelief
The blue and white ceramic shatters on the floor.
Margaret watches the impact in disbelief.
She sees the exact moment replay on the small glowing screen.
The video shows the heavy heirloom tipping over.
It hits the hardwood with a loud, destructive crack.
The audio from the phone speaker matches the exact echo heard earlier in the house.
It is the identical sound that had brought Margaret running into the living room in a blind panic.
Margaret stares at the digital playback with wide, unblinking eyes.
Her gaze darts back and forth between the shattered pieces on the rug and the moving image on the screen.
The golden retriever in the video wags his tail right after the crash.
Sammy trots away from the wreckage without a single care.
Margaret’s expression shifts from righteous anger to utter astonishment.
The harsh lines around her mouth soften into a look of absolute bewilderment.
The absolute certainty she felt just moments ago evaporates completely.
Hannah holds the phone steady in her palm.
She does not say a single word.
She simply lets the video loop from the beginning so Margaret can watch the entire sequence a second time.
Margaret opens her mouth to speak but fails to find any justification for her words.
