Chapter 1 — “That’s the Man”
Young Oliver suddenly stopped walking in the middle of the hotel lobby.
His hand tightened around his father’s fingers.
Then he pointed across the enormous marble room.
“That’s the man.”
Daniel immediately looked in the direction his son was pointing.
A stranger stood beside a brass luggage cart near the elevators.
Dark jacket.
Gray tie.
Small leather bag in one hand.
The man saw Oliver pointing.
His expression changed.
Then he turned away.
Daniel frowned.
“What man?”
Oliver pointed again.
“He talked to me.”
Daniel stopped.
“When?”
“Before you came downstairs.”
Daniel had left Oliver beside the reception seating area for less than three minutes while he collected a folder from the concierge desk.
Oliver had been within sight of hotel employees the entire time.
At least Daniel thought he had been.
“What did he say?”
Oliver looked toward the stranger.
“He asked my name.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
He walked across the lobby.
Oliver remained beside him.
The stranger looked toward the elevator again.
Daniel stopped in front of him.
“Excuse me.”
The man turned.
“Yes?”
Daniel pointed toward Oliver.
“Did you speak to my son?”
The stranger looked at the boy.
Then shook his head.
“No.”
Oliver immediately said:
“Yes, you did.”
The man gave an uncomfortable laugh.
“Maybe he’s confusing me with someone else.”
Daniel stared at him.
“He just pointed you out from across the lobby.”
“I’m sorry.”
The stranger shrugged.
“I’ve never spoken to him.”
Hotel manager Claire Morgan noticed the confrontation and walked over.
“Is there a problem?”
Daniel explained.
Claire looked toward Oliver.
“Do you remember where you were standing when he spoke to you?”
Oliver pointed toward the luggage cart near reception.
“There.”
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
A security camera covered that entire section.
“Then we can check.”
The stranger immediately said:
“This is unnecessary.”
Daniel looked toward him.
“Then the video should clear it up quickly.”
Claire opened the lobby recording on the security terminal.
The footage showed Oliver standing beside the luggage cart.
Alone.
Then the stranger entered the frame.
He did not merely walk past Oliver.
He changed direction.
Walked directly toward him.
Stopped.
Bent slightly so they were closer to eye level.
Then spoke to him for nearly twenty seconds.
Daniel froze.
Claire paused the video.
Daniel looked toward the stranger.
“You said you’d never seen my son.”
The man’s face tightened.
“I can explain.”
“Then start.”
Instead, Claire asked the stranger for his room number.
“417.”
She pulled up the registration record.
The room was registered to:
PETER LANE.
But beneath his name was another field.
RESERVATION ARRANGED BY: MARGARET BENNETT.
Daniel stopped breathing for a second.
Oliver looked up at him.
“Dad?”
Claire looked toward Daniel.
“You know that name?”
Daniel stared at Peter.
“That’s my mother.”
Peter’s expression changed instantly.
And suddenly Daniel no longer wanted to know only why the stranger had approached Oliver.
He wanted to know why a man connected to the mother he had not spoken to in eight years was waiting inside the same hotel.
