Chapter 5 — Margaret’s Apology
Daniel read silently.
Oliver sat beside him.
Peter remained across the desk.
Margaret had written:
Daniel, I spent years believing that loving my family gave me the right to keep inserting myself into decisions that were not mine.
Daniel stopped.
He read the sentence again.
Then continued.
Margaret did not say she had only been trying to help.
She did not say Daniel misunderstood her.
She did not list everything he had done wrong in response.
She wrote that she repeatedly crossed boundaries.
That she treated disagreement like disrespect.
That when Daniel became a father, she often behaved as though being Oliver’s grandmother gave her equal authority.
It did not.
Then:
You were right to tell me I could not arrive at your home whenever I wanted.
You were right that Oliver’s school, routines and parenting decisions belonged to you and Rachel, not me.
Daniel’s eyes moved toward Oliver.
Then back to the letter.
Margaret wrote that she had wanted to contact him many times.
She did not because the final boundary he set was clear.
If reconciliation ever happened, she could not force the first meeting.
At the bottom:
I am in Room 512 because I wanted to be close enough to come if you invited me and far enough away that you could leave without seeing me.
Then:
If the answer is no, Peter will tell me no. I will go home.
Daniel folded the letter.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then he looked toward Peter.
“And you ruined that by approaching Oliver.”
Peter nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Peter exhaled.
He had arrived in the lobby early.
He recognized Oliver from a photograph Margaret had shown him so he would know Daniel’s family if they entered together.
When Peter saw Oliver alone beside the luggage cart, he made an impulsive decision.
He wanted to confirm Daniel had arrived before calling Margaret.
So he asked Oliver’s name.
Then said the sentence about Margaret keeping her promise.
“That was inappropriate,” Peter said.
“I should have spoken only to you.”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Then why did you lie when I asked?”
Peter’s answer came quickly this time.
“Because the second I saw your reaction, I knew I had crossed the exact kind of boundary I was hired to help your mother respect.”
Daniel remained silent.
Peter continued.
“I panicked.”
“And instead of admitting it, I denied it.”
Oliver looked toward him.
“But camera saw.”
Peter smiled weakly.
“Yes.”
“The camera definitely saw.”
Then Claire noticed another line on Peter’s hotel registration.
MEETING ROOM HOLD — CEDAR ROOM — 8:00 PM.
She looked toward Daniel.
“There’s already a private room reserved downstairs.”
Peter’s expression changed.
Because Margaret had apparently prepared for Daniel to say yes…
while also preparing to leave if he said no.
