Chapter 8 — Peter Had Tried to Walk Away First

The earlier footage showed Peter standing near the reception desk.

He checked his phone.

Then saw Oliver beside the luggage cart.

Peter took two steps toward him.

Stopped.

Turned away.

Walked nearly halfway toward the elevators.

Then stopped again.

He looked back at Oliver.

Only then did he return and approach him.

Daniel watched carefully.

Claire said:

“It doesn’t excuse what he did.”

“But it does show it wasn’t something he’d been waiting all afternoon to do.”

Daniel looked toward Peter.

“What happened?”

Peter sighed.

“I was supposed to wait for you.”

“I saw Oliver.”

“I recognized him.”

“Then I thought if I simply confirmed he was your son, I could tell Margaret you’d arrived.”

“I started toward him.”

“Realized it was a bad idea.”

“Walked away.”

“Then made the bad decision anyway.”

Daniel nodded.

“And the message?”

Peter looked embarrassed.

“Worse.”

“Once I had already spoken to him, I thought telling you Margaret had respected your boundary might make the contact seem less inappropriate.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“So you crossed a boundary while delivering a message about respecting boundaries.”

Peter nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then lied about it.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not having your best professional evening.”

Peter gave a small, miserable smile.

“No.”

Daniel looked toward Oliver.

His son had done exactly what Daniel always taught him.

If an unfamiliar adult approached him and the situation felt strange, tell a trusted adult.

Oliver had not imagined anything.

He had not confused Peter with somebody else.

And he had not exaggerated.

The man approached him.

The camera proved it.

Daniel crouched beside Oliver.

“You did the right thing telling me.”

Oliver nodded.

“Even though he’s not bad?”

Daniel thought.

“You don’t need to decide whether someone is bad before telling me something happened.”

“Just tell me what happened.”

Oliver smiled slightly.

“Okay.”

Daniel stood.

Then walked toward the Cedar Room.

When he opened the door ten minutes later, Margaret Bennett was already sitting inside.

She stood when she saw him.

Neither spoke.

After eight years of silence, Daniel’s mother finally said his name.

“Daniel.”

And the first thing he noticed was that she did not walk toward him.
