Chapter 4 — Margaret Was Upstairs

Daniel stared at Peter.

“She’s here?”

Peter nodded.

“Yes.”

“In this hotel?”

“Yes.”

Claire checked the system.

Another reservation appeared.

MARGARET BENNETT — ROOM 512.

Check-in:

3:42 PM.

Daniel looked at the time.

Margaret had been inside the hotel for almost four hours.

“Why hasn’t she approached me?”

Peter answered:

“Because I told her not to.”

Daniel looked surprised.

Peter explained.

Margaret wanted to come downstairs the moment Daniel arrived.

Peter stopped her.

The entire purpose of hiring him was to prevent another conversation from beginning with someone forcing the other person into it.

Peter told Margaret she would remain in her room unless Daniel voluntarily agreed to meet.

“So far, she has.”

Daniel looked toward the envelope.

“Then why did you speak to Oliver?”

Peter’s expression changed.

“That was my mistake.”

Oliver was listening carefully.

Daniel turned toward him.

“What exactly did he say to you?”

Oliver looked toward Peter.

“He asked if I was Oliver Bennett.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What else?”

“I said yes.”

“Then he asked if you were my dad.”

“And?”

Oliver thought.

“Then he said, ‘Tell your dad his mother kept her promise.’”

Daniel froze.

Peter looked down.

Claire watched Daniel’s reaction.

“What promise?” she asked.

Daniel did not answer.

Eight years earlier, during his final argument with Margaret, he had told her:

“Do not come to my house uninvited again.”

“Do not contact Oliver through school.”

“Do not put Rachel in the middle.”

“If you ever want to fix this, start by respecting one boundary without arguing about it.”

Margaret had shouted back:

“Fine. I will stay away until you decide otherwise.”

And she had.

For eight years.

Daniel looked toward Peter.

“That’s what you meant?”

Peter nodded.

“She believes staying away was the only promise she managed to keep correctly.”

Daniel looked toward the sealed envelope again.

Then Peter finally handed it to him.

Inside was not an explanation.
