Chapter 4 — Marcus Steps Forward
Marcus did not back down from Claire’s searching gaze.
He stood in the middle of the school hallway, blocking the draft from the open lockers.
Other teachers walked past, carrying stacks of grading and half-empty coffee mugs.
They did not notice the heavy atmosphere hanging between the two adults.
“You’ve been helping him with homework twice a week,” Claire said.
“And David picks him up from soccer on Thursdays,” Marcus replied.
“That doesn’t make paperwork disappear, Marcus.”
“Paperwork was never the point of raising a boy.”
