Chapter 8 — The Weight of Bureaucracy
Marcus stepped closer and placed a hand on Leo’s shoulder.
“Go on inside, buddy,” Marcus told him.
“Class is going to start in a few minutes.”
Leo gave a small nod and scurried past them into the classroom.
The door clicked shut behind the young boy.
Claire stood back up, facing Marcus with a renewed sense of institutional frustration.
“The school board requires single-source emergency contacts,” Claire said.
“Forms don’t care about emotional nuance, Marcus.”
“Then maybe the forms need to change,” Marcus answered.
