Chapter 11 — The Knock at the Front Door
At 4:10 PM, a sharp knock echoed through the house.
Sarah stopped sweeping the guest room floor.
Marcus dropped the roll of packing tape on the bed.
They both walked out into the entryway together.
Maya peeked around the corner from the hallway.
Marcus reached out and touched Sarah’s shoulder.
“We do this together,” Marcus whispered.
Sarah took a deep breath and unlocked the deadbolt.
She pulled the heavy wooden front door open.
Elena stood on the porch.
She held a worn leather suitcase in one hand and her old handbag in the other.
