Chapter 2 — The Old Drawer in the Kitchen
Sarah refused to let the conversation drop in the hallway.
She walked past Marcus into the kitchen.
The brass key was still clutched tightly in her right hand.
She opened the top utility drawer beside the refrigerator.
That drawer had stayed locked for nearly three years.
Except it was not locked today.
Marcus followed her into the kitchen.
“Sarah, leave it alone,” he said.
“You left the key right on top of the mail holder,” Sarah replied.
She pointed down at the wooden counter.
“I wasn’t even looking for it.”
Marcus rubbed the back of his neck.
“It just came in the mail yesterday afternoon.”
Sarah stared at him across the kitchen island.
“Yesterday afternoon while I was at work?”
Marcus nodded slowly.
